An Overnight Fee, also known as a Swap or a Rollover Fee, is a charge or credit applied to your trading account when you keep a trade open past the daily market closing time.
This fee is handled automatically on your Tradin platform at the daily rollover time, which is usually 00:00 on our server's time.
Why Swaps Are Charged
The swap fee represents the interest paid or earned on the funds you effectively borrow when trading with leverage.
The swap calculation depends entirely on the financial instrument you are trading:
- Forex (Currencies): The swap is based on the interest rate difference between the two currencies in the pair.
- Commodities, Indices, and Shares: The swap is a small financing fee for holding the position overnight.
Because interest rates vary, the swap can be a charge (Negative Swap) or a payment (Positive Swap) to your account.
Why Swaps Matter to Your Trading
Swaps primarily affect Swing Traders who hold positions for multiple days. If you are a Day Trader and close your position before 00:00 server time, you will not be charged any swap fees.
If you hold positions overnight, these daily charges accumulate and will directly impact your long-term profit or loss.
Tip: If you do not want to pay or receive interest, Tradin offers a Swap-Free Account option.
Here is how the swaps differs by account type:
| Account Type | Swap Charges | Why It Matters |
| Swap-Charged (Standard/Raw) | Daily swaps are applied (charged or credited). | Your costs increase or decrease daily based on the market's interest rates. |
| Swap-Free | No overnight interest is applied. | Simplifies cost management for long-term strategies, especially for Sharia compliance. |
The Triple Swap Rule
To cover the full weekend period when markets are closed, a Triple Swap (three days' worth of fees) is applied once every week.
The day the Triple Swap is applied depends on the asset group:
- Wednesday Night: The triple swap is applied for Forex and Metals (e.g., Gold and Silver).
- Friday Night: The triple swap is applied for Indices and Cryptocurrencies.
Example: If your trade's normal daily swap is -$5, on the designated night, the swap debited from your account will be -$15.
How to Check Swap Rates on MT5
You can check the exact swap rate for any instrument directly on your Tradin MT5 platform before you place a trade.
- Open Market Watch: Find the symbol you want to trade (e.g., EUR/USD).
- View Specifications: Right-click the instrument and select Specification.
- Find the Rates: In the new window, look for the two critical values:
- Swap Long: The fee/credit applied if you Buy (go long) and hold overnight.
- Swap Short: The fee/credit applied if you Sell (go short) and hold overnight.
These values show the specific fee or credit that will be applied to your account.
