Hours, and the gap risk that comes with them

Shares trade during exchange hours only, and access before and after the main session is limited. United States shares on the NYSE and Nasdaq trade from 09:30 to 16:00 New York time. European shares follow London, Euronext and Xetra hours, and funds follow the hours of the exchange they list on.

Company news is usually published outside those hours, so a share can reopen a long way from where it closed without trading at any of the prices in between.

Share positions are closed before corporate events. One trading day before a dividend, an earnings announcement or a stock split, open positions on that share are closed automatically and the symbol goes close only. See Dividends, splits and earnings.

No shareholder rights

Because you never own the underlying share, you have no shareholder rights: no voting and no direct dividend payment from the company.
