MT5: Using Expert Advisors (EA)

An EA operates using a set of programmed trading rules. When the market conditions meet these rules, the EA can take specific actions without manual input.

An Expert Advisor can:

  • Monitor markets continuously, 24 hours a day

  • Send alerts when trading opportunities appear

  • Open trades automatically based on its strategy

  • Manage open positions, including adding Stop Loss or Take Profit levels

  • Close trades automatically when specific conditions are met

This automation allows traders to remove emotion from trading decisions and maintain consistency in their strategy execution.

Things You Must Know

Expert Advisors can be powerful tools, but they also carry risks. It is essential to understand the following before using one:

Desktop Only

EAs only work on the MT5 desktop program. They do not function on the mobile app for iPhone or Android devices.

They Can Lose Money

No EA can guarantee profits. Market conditions change constantly, and even the most advanced strategy can produce losses. A strategy that performed well in the past may not do so in the future.

Your Computer Must Stay On

For an EA to operate, your MT5 desktop platform must be open and connected to the internet. If your computer is turned off or your internet connection drops, the EA will stop running.
To keep an EA active at all times, many traders use a Virtual Private Server (VPS). A VPS is a remote computer that stays online 24/7, ensuring your EA continues to trade without interruption.

Expert Advisors can automate your trading and save time, but they require careful testing and risk management. Always monitor your EA’s performance and understand the strategy it uses before relying on it in live trading.
